Drive SW to Carlow. Today you have two options to choose from: (A) Canoe/Kayak the peaceful Barrow River (w Mary Anne) from Borris Village. Paddle past Closhastia Castle (c.1590), Ballykeenan Cut canal, drop down two levels at the double lock in the gorge, go by old growth pines, verdant green pastures and granite cliffs. Wind around monastic Graignamanagh, and the 9-arch bridge and a weir. Take out near Duiske Castle, (Glass), and Cushendale Woolen Mills. (2 hours total). (B) Drive to Jerpoint Abbey, demo with border collie dogs herding sheep. The shepherd is hilarious! Tour the 12th century medieval Lost Town of Newport (and St. Nicholas’ tomb) which was discovered by the owners in the brush about 25 years ago. Enter the old church ruins. The town was abandoned in the 1600’s and Mr. and Mrs. O’Connell give it life.
Groups A and B join and go thru Co. Kilkenny and Co. Waterford. Once in Youghal, we are in Co. Cork, and we proceed to our hotel. Swim? DINNER TOGETHER at MARYBOROUGH HOTEL & SPA, CORK CITY.
